Greddy Profec Type S boost controller

This month's Power Pages features a returning friend. You may remember this white Satria from a previous article, where this GSR powered hatch received an intercooler upgrade and new spark plug cables. Unhappy with the miniscule power increase, Alex decided to turn things up with a GReddy Profec Type S boost controller.

The Type S is a simple and back to basics boost controller and is easy to use. It may not have the fancy features of other electronic boost controllers such as the A'PEXi AVC-R or the HKS EVC, but the GReddy Profec Type S is very versatile and great value for money.

The Type S has two rotary switches to select two independent boost setting (a Lo. and a Hi.), while another "Gain" switch compensates the wastegate's valve response. Now, matched with a quick acting, large capacity inline control solenoid, the Type-S can increase boost as high as 3.0kg/cm2 (42.66psi) and it works with both integral and external wastegate set-ups. The best part is, it can be paired up with GReddy's Remote Switching System; Scramble Boost Baby!

Turning up the boost on a turbo car is an easy and surefire way to get more power out of it, provided the engine is up to the task of handling increased cylinder pressures. It's also a good idea to have the ECU re-tuned to match the increased boost pressures, as factory ECUs run rich, and tweaking the air fuel ratio will make the most of the increased boost.. Fortunately, Alex already had an E-Manage installed, so we were able to make more power safely.

When we last saw Alex's car on the dyno, it made 222.2 horsepower at the wheels. With the boost controller, we expected a gain of at least 20hp. Boost was turned up to around 1bar and then the E-Manage was re-tuned to ensure everything was running safely and smoothly.

Thanks to James of Avantgarde and Daniel of D'Tuning, Alex's car now makes 238.64bhp at the wheels. While this somewhat fell short of the 20bhp increase we were expecting, we were quite pleased with the result. Torque has also increased to a more meaty 29.91kg/m.

The boost controller has changed the way the car drives for the better, as boost comes in earlier and the TD05 feels a lot more responsive than before. This goes to show that numbers on the dyno are not everything. Although it gained only 16bhp, the car feels a lot livelier and responsive thanks to the boost coming on earlier in the rev range.

Now we just need to "racun" Alex to get the GReddy Remote Switching System.
